10 Mistakes Made on Birthright Israel

More than 600 000 people have been on a free trip to Israel and how many are guilty of these same 10 mistakes made on Birthright Israel? Honestly, we’d rather not know. Instead, we’ve compiled a list to help you, the future traveler from making the same “Birthright Blunders”.

1. Shaving before swimming in the Dead Sea

Dipping your face or freshly shaved legs into the Dead Sea is kind of like taking an acid bath – it’ll give you a sting you’ll never forget. While we’re talking about “the sting”, we also strongly advise that you never attempt putting your head under water in the Dead Sea. Even if your eyes are closed, “the sting” still finds its way in, and you will reemerge convinced that you have been permanently blinded.

2. Falling “in love” too soon

A lot can happen in 10 days, and a lot can change. Someone catches your eye on the first day, and by day 4 you’ve noticed they’re a perpetual nose-picker. Avoid the awkwardness, keep things in the friends zone until you’re sure.

3. Sun protection? Who needs that!?

Getting sunburned on the first day of a trip – an amateur mistake we’ve all made at some point. Birthright Israel trips include a lot of time spent in the great outdoors, so find a hat that you like, and start bonding, because you’re going to spend a lot of time together.

4. Not buying enough rugelach and jelly sweets to take home

There’s nothing like Israeli jelly sweets and the chocolately goodness of Marzipan rugelach. Both can be bought at the market in Jerusalem, and both should be bought in abundance. Go on, take another bag! Don’t underestimate yourself!

5. Not owning water shoes

Is “water shoes” a nice way of saying crocs? Maybe, but we’ll leave that up to you to decipher. Aside from really sharp salt crystals at the Dead Sea, most trips include water hikes, which will leave your regular trainers completely damp and gross for the rest of the trip.

6. Getting “slightly carried away” on your night out in Tel Aviv

You’re in a foreign country, in one of the world’s top clubs, with amazing new friends, and the DJ is playing your song. It’s easy to forget your limits…but try to keep it together, otherwise the next few days could feel kinda awkward…

7. Packing way too much

You’re literally staying in a different place every night, are you sure you want to lift that on and off the bus for the next 10 days? Also, it might be an idea to take a look at what kind of activities are on the itinerary before packing that tuxedo. Check out our Top 10 Packing Hacks for Savvy Travelers.

8. Lingering around your camel’s face

If you’d like to avoid a rather gruesome exchange of bodily fluids or your hair being mistaken for breakfast… get that camel selfie as quick as you can and then move right along.

9. Not extending your trip

You’ve flown all the way to the other side of the world, met amazing people, half of which are continuing their travels in either Israel or Europe… and there you are, going home. Come on, you can do better than that! Might as well make the most of the free flight is what we say.

10. Not charging your phone while you had the chance

You’ve climbed Masada in the dark, just in time to make it to the top to watch the sunrise… and your battery dies before you could Instagram it!? No. Sorry, you’ll have to come back tomorrow.
